WILL A PERSONAL TRAINER REALLY HELP?
That, my friends, is a loaded question! It depends greatly on several factors. I will tackle what I feel is the most common question first, and end with what I feel is the most important question.
First, let’s talk certifications. Is it important to hire a personal trainer who has a particular set of certifications? Short answer: yes and no. I have met many trainers who have stacks of certifications but little to no ability to be interpersonal with their clients. I have also met trainers with few certifications whose intuition is unmatched and have excellent communication with their clients, which make for a great trainer. The best answer in finding a trainer with the correct qualifications for YOU? Have a conversation with the trainer you’re thinking to hire and feel out whether or not they are listening to what YOU need in a trainer. Are they listening to what is important to you and willing to create a plan based on your goals, or are they blinded by whatever manual they read and trying to fit you into a box that you don’t fit into?
Now, there are certain times where certifications may be a bit more important than others. For example, if you are training for a triathlon, would you hire an Olympic Weightlifting coach to get you there? You might, and you’d show up on race day with a great looking clean and jerk but little to no ability to open water swim! If you have a specialized goal, you need a trainer who specializes in getting you there.
What is the most important factor in determining whether or not a personal trainer will really help? YOU. Are you ready to listen, learn, and make changes in your life? If you are not ready to be coachable and make a change, no trainer will be able to help you. So, gather up all your motivating energy and start looking for a trainer who will guide you to new heights!
Psst... it’s me... I’m the trainer who will guide you to new heights!
